It does get pricey the more records I get though and is obviously no good for someone with hundreds or thousands of them. I like the appearance of them inside as they should be like also like the ease of use of having them out.Īs for dust, I keep most of my records inside Odessey Krom storage cases. If they're sitting in crates, it seems like more of a potential problem.Ĭlick to expand.Yeah, thats where I started doing it too, they were shipped me like that and I noticed how much easier it was to get them out and playing and also seemed like there were less chances to get some kind of hairline scratches possibly from going in and out of the jacket.Īnd yeah, I considered also keeping the inner sleeve pointing outward so the records could just be pulled out without having to take the sleeve out as well but you'd still have to take the jacket out, and then slide the record out. So that's a minor consideration, but if the records are going into a cabinet, it's probably not a big deal. I was always trained to put records in their dust jackets, and then into the outer sleeve with the dust jacket opening pointing away from the outer sleeve opening, specifically to keep dust out (as well as to keep the record in). The one thing I do worry about with LPs out of their sleeves is that for the easiest access, the opening of the dust jacket would be pointing up, which means dust could be getting in (I don't use the plastic sleeves with flaps). It can be a challenge just to find a flat surface to put that stuff onto. ![]() Second record comes out of plastic sleeve, out of outer jacket, out of dust jacket, onto turntable. First record comes off the turntable, into dust jacket, into outer sleeve, into plastic sleeve. ![]() It's definitely a hassle, especially when you're switching records. Not a perfect solution, but a good compromise, IMHO.Ĭlick to expand.I agree. This means the record could come right out of the inner sleeve and the jacket if gravity is allowed to do its thing, but I felt a little better about this considering the outer poly sleeve is sealed. In many of those cases, I found the inner sleeve would slide in better with the opening pointing outward instead of upward. I did have some "tight fit" jackets as the OP was mentioning. I have the "Blake" sleeves and I saw a tip about putting the resealable flap over the opening in the jacket, which I thought gave a good combination of easy access and protection - the jacket never has to come out of the protective sleeve, so it doesn't need to be handled as much as if you had to remove the jacket to get at the record. Having the records outside the jacket was taking up slightly more shelf space, and I started to get some paranoia about the record being protected by just a thin inner sleeve and poly outer sleeve. I was doing this for a number of records, primarily because they were shipped to me outside the jacket, but I switched back to putting the records in the sleeves. ![]()
